On Saturday 24th January, team rider Luke Cheetham made the long journey down to the National Velodrome in Newport, Wales to take part in the Icebreaker Youth Series, Round 1
We asked Luke for his thoughts on the weekend and how it went for him
” The first race was a qualifier for the scratch race final. I didn’t want to use all my energy so I just sat in and sprinted at the end to make sure I qualified.
Next was the scratch race final. It was constantly fast straight from the start and I stayed sat in the middle of the bunch. It came down to a sprint where I finished just in the middle of the bunch due to some unlucky positioning.
Then it was the points race qualifier where I sat towards the front of the bunch. I waited until the final sprint and went for that getting 5th and qualifying for the final later on.
Next was the devil. It was quick straight from the start and I was quite close to the back. I put in an effort and went over the top onto the front. From there I stayed towards the front of the group moving around until I was called out and came 6th or 7th.
Last race of the day was the points race final. An attack went for the first sprint which I chased down and tried to stay away myself. I got caught with a lap before the sprint. For the rest of the race I stayed near the front and went with the front split to get a top 10 in the final sprint. “
