Race Report – Hetton-Le-Hole National Series
Meanwhile, last Sunday two of the team travelled to Hetton-Le-Hole in the North East of England for the first National Series Youth Race.
The event attracted 80 of the best riders from the UK all looking to put down a marker in the series and score vital points for future selections.
The weather was good but the biting wind experienced on Saturday had hung around so a few extra layers were vital.
There was quite a lot of standing water on the circuit and with such a large field on a technical, hilly and wet circuit, the race was always going to be a sketchy affair.
The race was 30 laps (60km) and the pace throughout was high (fastest we’ve seen at Hetton) and despite this, both Nathan and Lewis held good positions throughout and avoided some of the larger pile ups.
A large number of riders crashed or were impeded by crashes, many of whom took laps out, some being questionable!
As the race entered the final two laps both Nathan and Lewis were caught behind another crash and at the same time four riders had managed to chip off the front.
This skirmish was very frustrating for both our riders as they were then unable to get back on to the bunch contest the final gallop. The four riders that escaped held their gap to the finish with Matthew Shaw from Solihul taking an impressive win.
Both Lewis and Nathan rolled home just off the back of the bunch but were also pleased to go home without any injuries!
